Shayana Ekadashi is also called as Ashadha Shukla Paksha Ekadashi which is the most significant day for Hindus. This Shayana Ekadashi is related to Lord Vishnu which is also known as Devshayani Ekadashi, Ashadi Ekadashi, Hari Shayani Ekadashi, Maha-Ekadashi and Prathama Ekadashi. This year Shayana Ekadashi falls on July 4th, 2017, i.e., on Tuesday.

On this day the devotees worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi according to the Muhurt and Puja Vidhi and listen to the Devshayani Ekadashi Vrat Katha. During this period Lord Vishnu goes to sleep and wakes up after four months on Prabodhini Ekadashi. This day the devotees will worship the images of Vitthal Rukmini.

This occasion has a special significance as Lord Vishnu will sleep in Ksherasagar the Lake of Milk on the Shesha Shaiyana the bed of Shesha Nag. The event on this day is called as Dev-Shayani Ekadashi or Hari-Shayani Ekadashi or Shayana Ekadashi. The four months that Vishnu sleeps is called as Chaturmas which falls during rainy season.

Devashayani Ekadashi Vrat Katha:

Devshayani Ekadashi was explained by Lord Krishna to Yudisthira and according to Bhavishya Purana Scripture, which is the tale of King Mandata. The King in this tale is observed facing drought for three consecutive years leading to Mayhem. For this Rishi Angiras advised the king to follow the Vrata of Dev Shayani Ekadashi and with the advice of Rishi the King does the same.

By the time the Vrata is ended the Kingdom is blessed with rains which brought Life and Prosperity. On the day as the King got all his rituals back he is blessed by Lord Vishnu. So on this day, Hindus listen to this Devshayani Ekadashi Vrat Katha.

According to the Hindu Calendar, the month of Ashadha is the month that Shayana Ekadashi falls. Ekadashi Tithi Begins on July 3rd, 2017 at 22:15 pm. The Ekadashi Tithi ends on July 5th at 00:29 am. The Parana time is 07:04 am to 08:17 am on July 5th.
