Muhammad Ali, the silver-tongued American professional boxer and civil rights champion who famously proclaimed himself “The Greatest” and then spent a lifetime living up to the billing, is dead. Ali died on June 3rd Friday at a Phoenix-area hospital, where he had spent the past few days being treated for respiratory complications.
Ali was known for being a controversial and polarizing figure both inside and outside the boxing ring.He was one of the most recognized sports figures of the past 100 years, crowned “Sportsman of the Century” by Sports Illustrated and “Sports Personality of the Century” by the BBC. He also wrote several best-selling books about his career, including The Greatest: My Own Story and The Soul of a Butterfly.
Ali(originally known as Cassius Clay) was born on Jan. 17, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky, to middle-class parents. He started boxing when he was at the age of 12. He turned professional shortly afterward, supported at first by Louisville business owner. As his profile rose, Ali acted out against American racism.
